Raccoons have little hands at their wrists, but huge “hands” in their brains. Compared to cats and dogs, more of a raccoon’s brain is dedicated to the animal’s sense of touch. Touch receptors in the paw-pads transmit signals to the brain; the more touch receptors in the paw, the bigger the brain area that receives these signals. Indeed, raccoons can handle objects with their five-fingered forepaws nearly as well as monkeys!
